Review: Rise of the Fae

Rise of the Fae (ARC Review)
The Society Book 2
Published November 10, 2015 by Lyrical Press
5 BLOODY FANGS!!!

"Its hard to find someone who can love all parts of you, the good along with the bad. Especially when have more than one person living inside of you."

Synopsis -

In a post-virus New World, authentic humans are a hot commodity. And The Society rules.

Neeman has tried everything to overcome the pain of both heartbreak and being forcibly turned into a vampyr. When he meets the headstrong Selene in a nightclub, she could be the change he needs. Her beautiful human-like features stand out among the vamps, and he has no choice but to bring her back to his Tracking Squad’s compound before she gets herself killed.

Charged with stopping a demon invasion, Selene has been sent back to the Earth Realm by the Fae. But en route, she loses the talisman that can keep her darker nature, and her impulses, under control. With Vampires now ruling Earth there are more vices than ever to distract her from her mission. Especially Neeman, whose hard body and piercing gaze awakens a primal desire within her. He’s the only one who can protect her from The Society, and from even darker forces on the horizon…but he can’t protect her from himself. (Goodreads)

Review -

In Reign of the Vampire, Rebekah R. Ganiere introduced us to a new breed of vampires, with three distinct classifications; the Vampires whom were born, the vampyr who were bitten and the vamps who were victims of an experiment gone horribly wrong. Readers also learned that the human race was close to extinction, as well as the existence of demons. This action packed addition to the series introduces the fae, and Tinkerbell they are not.

By the end of Reign of the Vampire, most were thinking of Neeman as a whiny, conceded bitch. Before getting to the end of Chapter one those feelings will completely change. Readers will get a much more in depth look at the man and start seeing him as much more than just a jealous ex. By the middle of the book he will develop an even bigger cheering squad than Mason had.

Neeman never wanted to become a vampyr and has always hated and mistrusted that part of himself, and always mourned his mortal life. Having been able to find comfort within Dannika and then losing her just made things seem all the worse. But when a seemingly harmless 'human' walks onto the dance floor of his bar of choice, his entire world gets flipped upside down real quick. The vixen seems to be just looking for trouble in the worst possible way, and looking to make his head split in two. And though he can't seem to keep track of whether or not her eyes our purple or green, the more he learns about her, the more he wants her. But trouble seems to just follow in her wake and he knows she is hiding something that could destroy what little peace left in this plain of the Earth.

Most people have a metaphorical hidden inner demon, some like Selene have a very real hidden inner demon. One hell bent on causing chaos and destruction wherever she goes. That isn't her biggest problem. She has been sent back to Earth, something she couldn't be more joyous about if it hadn't come with the mission she's been sent on. If she goes through with what it is she's supposed to do, not only will she lose what little family she has left, but the one male she has come to love. And while the vampires may be sick and twisted in their own ways, they have at least kept up some semblance of peace.  The same won't be said if the fae or demons have their way.

This book is for true fans of the lore and vampires who most definitely do not shine unless they're glistening with sweat, or blood. Full of action, blood, guts, chaos, mayhem, plot twists, characters full of life and some romance thrown in between. A series to be enjoyed by any gender, so long as they are not squeamish. Though this book can be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading book 1 first.

Act of Mercy Review

Act of Mercy by Mandy M. Roth
Psi Ops Book 1
Published March 3, 2014 by Raven Books
5 Earth Shattering Growls!!

"Every orphans dream is to have a family, sometimes they end up with more than they bargained for."

Synopsis -

PSI-Ops Series is a spin-off series to the Immortal Ops World.

Paranormal Security and Intelligence Operative Duke Marlow has a new mission: find, interrogate and eliminate the target—Mercy Deluca. She’s more than he bargained for and Intel has it all wrong. She’s not the enemy. Far from it. Intel forgot to mention one vital piece of information—she’s Duke’s mate. And this immortal alpha werewolf doesn’t take kindly to her being in danger.

Review -

Once readers pick this book up they will not be able to put it down until the very end. Non-stop action from one page to the next that will leave you questioning the advances that have been made in the name of science, and just how far some may be wiling to go to further it along even more.

Dr. Mercy Deluca has never had much of a social life nor any type of real family. Hopping along from one foster home after the next growing up, the only thing she always had to rely up was her intelligence. So when she is offered a job within The Corporation, a biometric engineering research facility looking for ways to improve humanity, she's more than excited when offered an important role within their establishment. Not learning that the true nature of their research was by far anything but humane. In way too deep to simply just walk away, she puts in a call for help bringing down The Corporation. Problem is, the person who answers only offers to her is help with some anal probing.

Duke Marlow hates pretty much everything this day and age has to offer; the technology of it and airplanes most of all. Everything that is besides his job and his brothers-in-arms. But one phone call, or rather several irritating small ones, will turn his world upside down. One of his brothers, a werewolf named James, has been off the grid for a decade now. When intel comes in that is so encrypted their own techs can just barely decipher it, one part of the message comes through very loud and clear, James is being held captive. Duke and all of the other shifters know all to well what that usually means, he is being tortured. One vital piece of the intel also leaves them questioning the whether the sender is friend or foe. Duke's instincts tell him it is the latter, a feeling he must hold onto because his is screaming, MINE.

Mandy M. Roth creates a picture like quality within the minds eye. Every page is filled with wit and humor that will have readers laughing so loud anyone around them will be thinking they have lost their minds, fun, love, violence, diabolical masterminds, characters to captivate the readers heart and deeply heated love scenes that will leave steam coming off the page. A must read for any Paranormal Romance lover who loves the heat as well as the action.

4 Bloody Fangs
Review:

Marissa Clarke will sink her fangs into readers from page one and keep latched on until the very last page. Fast paced, action packed read with plenty of characters to love and ones readers will love to hate.

All Elena Acros wanted to do was grab a candy bar to regulate her sugar. What she gets instead is her life turned upside down and thrust into a world she could never have even imagined existed, but apparently was born a part of. A world consisting of every mythical faction ever though of, and some never even imagined. As if that isn't a shock enough to her system, there is also a very large bounty on her head. And the egocentric, overbearing, control freak of a Slayer charged with the task of taking her life has also taken over her libido. Though the fact that he continues to drag her around like a puppy dog while he decides on if he should, she has a couple tricks up her own sleeve to in order to cut the leash.'

Nikolai has had one goal for the past fifteen years, avenge his father. So when he is assigned the task to take out his killers offspring, he is more than up for it. Only when he gets up close and personal, he realizes there is much more to her than what he was led to believe. The he now must answer is not only what exactly she is, but what was the true reason her execution was ordered. Nik ends up being in a race against time because the prophecy embedded on his flesh is also on hers.

Love Me to Death is much more than just a Paranormal Romance, it is an intriguing tail that lovers of the Supernatural are sure to eat up. With a heroine who doesn't just sit around and mope when she learns her fate and what she truly is, but embraces that power and faces it head on. While it may not be a complete mystery of whodunnit, learning all the players that took part and learning which characters are what they seem to be is a highly entertaining thrill ride. One can't go wrong with a muumuu that purrs, literally.

Origins Review

Origins by Sean Hayden
Demonkin Book 1
RePublised September 2, 2014
5 BLOODY CLAWS AND FANGS!

"Urban Fantasy at its Bloody best. All Paranormal lovers will love this, regardless of gender."

Synopsis -

Being different is never easy, especially when you're a vampire.

Ashlyn is far from normal. She was born a vampire, a trait that makes her utterly unique. Knowing this, her family strived to keep her existence a secret. Tragedy forces her from hiding and hunger drives her into the open. Unfortunately, living in a world that has accepted, embraced, and yet still fears the supernatural is never a good place to stand out. Especially when the one who notices you wants you dead. The only people who can save her want to use her as well, but she's left with little choice. Ashlyn joins the FBI and becomes torn between two worlds. She can either be a monster, or she can help destroy them. (Goodreads)

Review -

This is one tale of "Who's the Daddy?" that would have even me watching Maury Povich. Readers won't be finding any romance within these pages. What they will find is plenty of action, blood and a sinisterly good plot. As Ashlyn tries in vane to discover what she truly is, readers will know from page one exactly that, and just which infamous demon spawned her.

Ashlyn would believe that she was a vampire as everyone else does, if it wasn't for all of the anomalies that is her. The biggest one of all being the fact that she was born this way, not made. It isn't until she is unexpectedly thrust into the real world, after growing up in compete seclusion, that she realizes just how many differences she truly has.

After having gone two days without feeding, Ashlyn's hunger strikes with a vengeance. Only her thirst doesn't seem to be for human blood at all, unless it contains more than a taste of magic within its cells. So when she allows her nose to lead her to a vampire bar it could prove to be the either the best decision she has ever made, or the worst mistake of her unlife.

Readers will not be able to put Origins down until they reach the bloody end. This is a read not intended for the squeamish in any way, as it is filled with blood, violence and plenty of macabre mayhem. Sean Hayden has created a true monster, and one that is loyal to a fault. Walk into a world where all of the creatures that go bump in the night are a part your everyday society and policing them would be impossible had the FBI not brought about a task force comprised of their very brethren. And when the revelation is made at the end, the Demon in question will despise the phrase, "You are the Father!", but the question readers will be left with is will he do what he has been decreed?

Any and all fans of Urban Fantasy and Supernatural are sure to love this read, and be more than ready to get their hands on Book 2, Deceptions.

Betting on Julia Review

Betting on Julia by Nina Croft (ARC Review)
Melville Sisters Book 2
Published August 25, 2014 by Entangled: Covet
3.75 Claws

"In looking for what they both wanted, they find what it is they truly need."

Synopsis -

Small, blonde, bubbly, and with a penchant for all things pink, Julia Melville has always considered herself a nice girl – until she was attacked by a werewolf. Months later, and still in total denial, Julia spends the time between full moons fantasizing that her life is normal. And who could be better to help her with that than her new neighbor, handsome accountant, Sebastian Crane.

For two hundred years, Sebastian, a powerful warlock, has been possessed by a demon. Each day, his soul grows darker, and he knows that soon he will be beyond salvation. But the demon loves to gamble, and he’s made Bastian one final bet—get a good woman to say the words “I love you” and he’ll be free.

Julia wants a normal guy. Bastian needs a good woman. Maybe together they can find something far more valuable…redemption.

Review -

While not being my usual cup of tea, which I'm beginning to see has nothing do with the author (because Nina Croft definitely knows how to bring on the action, mayhem, violence and steam) but more to do with the publisher. Covet is more of a Paranormal Lite. For those readers who would like to try the waters of the Paranormal, but not quite ready to take that full plunge into the darkside. Though most authors fail to grasp what that truly means and write more of a Contemporary Romance where one of  the characters just happens to have fangs or a set of claws. Nina Croft manages to tone the nit, grit blood and gore without losing the full essence of the wolf.

That being said, I like my werewolves strong, dominant, fur flying trying to tear each others throats out, or fucking each others brains out with no compunction or worrying about hurt feelings, at least until they find their soul mates. Not quite the case here. I would not recommend this to die hard werewolf fans looking for that sense of pack life, danger, blood, history, gore and diabolical plots, but, as a good filler while waiting on that next book, like say, Book 4 of The Order or Blood Hunter series, it is a good read.

Bastien has made a bet against anyone in the Supernatural world knows you should not, a demon. But when the prize is his own freedom, to finally be rid of this demon, how he possibly say no. Especially when the task is so simple, "Get a good woman to say, 'I love you'". There is no such thing as simple when it comes to a demon. The woman in question turns out to be Julia Melville, a werewolf. If there is one faction of creatures Sebastien hates its werewolves, the vial beings who caused him to lose his family and the reason he has been stuck with a demon for two hundred years.

Julia has been bound and determined since her attack to pretend that it never even happened. Except for during her FMS, Full Moon Syndrome. Any time other than that Thing just doesn't even exist. Well, her mysterious next door neighbor is making it impossible to ignore Thing, at times making her volatile and others wagging her tail in utter content. Things become even more complicated with the attraction she feels brewing between the two of them, though neither are even looking for a relationship. As always though, what we're looking for is not always what we need. What she's looking for is normal, anything to help her forget what she really is now. Sebastien seems to just bring it to the surface. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Fun, magical and with a little action thrown in for good measure, Betting on Julia is an enjoyable, wonderfully written, lite read. Though it did end with quite a few unanswered questions; what happened to Sebastiens' daughter, while his wife may have been mortal, his daughter did have his...genes. Those readers looking for a Paranormal Lite with werewolves, this is the perfect read for you.

Night Broken Review

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs
Mercy Thompson Book 8

As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.  (Goodreads)

Review

As someone who has followed this series from the very beginning, I have to admit I was totally afraid of what would happen once Mercy and Adam finally gave in to their desires to be with one another.  So many great series hold so much onto the theme of star-crossed lovers, heated attraction that always just almost comes to fruition but never truly does.  Then when they finally become an item, disaster strikes where they can be together no more.  I am more than happy to say Briggs did not take that route.  Not only are Adam and Mercy stronger and better together than they ever were apart, but Briggs also did not take away anything that made fans love the strong willed Walker.  Mercedes Thompson Hauptman never has been a typical damsel in distress waiting for the Big Bad Wolf to dash to her rescue, nor too stupid to ask for help when needed.  Even if that means asking a Father whom she will never feel she can truly trust.  After-all, they don't call Coyote the mischievous, trickster Spirit for nothing, but his machinations just may be for the greater good, and the proverbial apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.  And Mercy is about to find out that she isn't the only apple that fell.

When we last left Mercy in River Crossed, the Fae had retreated from the human population, the walking stick had developed a mind and will of its own, and a thirst for blood leading Mercy to give it to Coyote for safe keeping, and Mercy realized the blood bond she had with Stephan was still indeed intact.   All of that and more come into play in Night Broken.

Mercy thinks she has it bad enough when gets paid a visit by one of the Grey Lords demanding the return of the Walking Stick, by weeks' end.  No problem, that.  All she has to do is just as Coyote to give it back, which is inevitably easier said than done.  Along her journey to find Coyote, she finds an "Almost half brother" she never knew she had.  Never one to deal with one problem at a time, Mercy also finds herself sharing her home with its previous owner, Christy, Adam's ex wife.  Christy is on the run from a stalker, and who else would she turn to other than her Alpha Werewolf ex-husband?  Just because he has a new wife doesn't mean she can't come home, right?  Well, the master manipulator brings more to their doorstep than just a few jealous bones, but a dangerous stalker that proves to be much more than human, and deadlier than any vampire, fae or werewolf.  A creature so deadly that not even Bran nor the Fae know how to kill him.

Full of non-stop action, surprises, including Tad proving that he is Zee's son in much more than name only, and flying body parts that will literally set you on fire.  This book should not be read as a stand alone, to get the true feel, readers are advised to read the entire series.  Not for the faint of heart, and perfect for those who love that chill up your spine feeling.
